Gua sha - a timeless ritual

Let's get acquainted

Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian massage technique that has become increasingly popular in beauty routines in recent years. It is performed using a specially designed tool that gently glides across the skin with targeted movements.

The origins of Gua Sha trace back to ancient China. Historically, this technique was used for:

  • body massage to reduce stagnation,
  • relieving pain,
  • supporting organ function according to traditional Chinese medicine,
  • reducing fever and physical tension.

Facial, neck, and décolleté Gua Sha is a more modern and gentler adaptation of the traditional technique, designed for beauty and self-care rather than medical treatment. Today, Gua Sha has become especially popular in the West as part of an effective daily ritual that helps maintain natural beauty.

Benefits of Gua Sha massage

Promotes lymphatic flow

When the skin is massaged with gentle, targeted strokes - especially around the face and neck - lymphatic circulation is stimulated. This may help reduce puffiness, under-eye bags, and leave the skin looking fresher and more rested.

Improves blood circulation

Stimulating blood flow may help oxygenate the skin and prepare it to better absorb skincare products.

Helps relax muscles

The Gua Sha technique helps release tension in facial muscles, particularly around the jaw, forehead, and brow area. This can be especially beneficial for people who clench or grind their teeth at night (bruxism).

May support a natural "lifting" effect

With regular use, facial contours may appear more defined and sculpted. While it is not a miracle facelift, gentle and consistent massage can create visibly pleasing results over time.

When can it be used?

Facial massage with the ALAUSHU® stainless steel Gua Sha tool is suitable for the face, neck, and décolleté areas. It can be incorporated into both morning and evening skincare routines. Morning massage may help reduce puffiness, stimulate lymphatic flow, and refresh the complexion. A chilled Gua Sha tool can further help reduce swelling around the eyes, improve skin tone, and give the skin a natural glow. In the evening, Gua Sha can help relax facial muscles after a long day, easing tension in the jaw and forehead.

What should you know before starting?

Prepare your skin

Before using Gua Sha, thoroughly cleanse your skin and apply a generous amount of serum, facial oil, or cream. Always use the tool on well-lubricated skin to ensure smooth gliding and avoid pulling.

Massage with purposeful movement

In the face, lymphatic drainage mainly flows toward the lymph nodes near the ears and down the neck. For this reason, massage movements should be directed from the center of the face outward, and downwards along the neck.

Gently glide the tool:

  • from the center of the chin along the jawline toward the ears,
  • from the inner corner of the eye outward,
  • from the eyebrows toward the temples.

Use very light pressure, especially around sensitive areas.

Be consistent

A daily massage lasting 3-5 minutes is often more effective than occasional intense treatments. Facial skin and lymph nodes are delicate, and excessive pressure may cause irritation or bruising.

Pay attention to your skin condition

If you have active acne, rosacea, dermatitis, or other inflammatory skin conditions, avoid massaging affected areas to prevent irritation.

How to perform this massage?

Apply a generous amount of your favorite cream, serum, or facial oil to the face, neck, and décolleté so the tool can glide smoothly.

Massage using gentle movements:

  • from the chin toward the ears,
  • from the nose outward toward the cheeks,
  • from the eyebrows toward the temples.

After use, wash the tool with soap or your usual cleanser and dry it thoroughly.

For an even more refreshing and cooling effect, store your Gua Sha tool in the refrigerator.
